Introduction to PBT 1401X06
As plastic materials continue to become highly integrated and functionally integrated, PBT 1401X06 has demonstrated outstanding suitability in the field of automotive electronic structural components due to its excellent electrical properties, stable dimensional performance, and lightweight characteristics. As a non-reinforced injection-molding grade in the polybutylene terephthalate PBT family, 1401X06 represents Toray's continuing quest for high reliability in general-purpose engineering plastics.
01 | Overview of Material Properties: Unreinforced but Not Simple
Excellent electrical properties: volume resistance of up to 1E13 Ω-cm, dielectric strength of 22 kV/mm, and robust performance on a number of PLC indices such as CTI and HAI, making it suitable for use in long-term electrical environments.
Strong dimensional stability: Even for non-reinforced grades, 1401X06 has a UL dimensional stability test of 0%, which ensures precision assembly of structural components while maintaining light weight.
Good toughness: Tensile strength of 55 MPa and elongation of up to 30% provide good moulding integrity and fracture toughness.
Insulation and Arc Resistance: Arc withstand time of 144 seconds prevents breakdowns or traces in high-voltage environments.
Smooth moulding: Low coefficient of friction (only 0.13 non-lubricated to metal) with flow lengths up to 103mm for smooth injection moulding processes.
02 | Areas of application: from electrical housings to light-duty structural components
Structural housings for automotive electronics: e.g. electronic control boxes, fuse housings, structural components of signal modules for non-high-heat environments with HB flame retardant rating.
Light duty consumer electronic parts: such as plastic switch housings, battery covers, module packages, etc., in scenarios requiring high electrical performance but moderate mechanical strength.
Structural parts for home appliances: such as humidifier shells, fan bases, power connector boxes, etc., taking into account processing costs and electrical safety.
03 | Processing Suggestions and Precautions
Injection Temperature Suggestions: It is recommended to set the temperature in the range of 250~260°C to avoid decomposition caused by overheating.
Mould Temperature Control: It is recommended to maintain the mould temperature around 80°C to improve the surface quality and reduce the internal stress.
Flow path design: It is suitable to design a medium flow path length to avoid the risk of fusion marks caused by long and thin channels.
Avoid excessive moisture: pre-drying is recommended before moulding to control the water absorption below 0.08%.

06 | Where is this material suitable?
PBT 1401X06 is a good candidate if your product design meets any of the following criteria:
Long-term electrical insulation is required, e.g. for high CTI requirements or frequently energised parts;
The design objective is to balance structural lightness with injection moulding flow;
Stable environment, thermal loads of up to 140°C, and the need to maintain dimensional accuracy;
Adequate mechanical support is desirable without the use of glass fibre reinforcement. The desire to obtain sufficient mechanical support without the use of glass fibre reinforcement.
Under these conditions, polybutylene terephthalate PBT material 1401X06 not only maintains process efficiency, but also offers the ideal solution in terms of performance, cost and safety.
